two truth windows

we found a lovely north facing basement window. and determined our basement is 6" sitecast concrete with a 1-3/4" x 5-3/4" pony wall, with gypsum lath and plaster, with an insulated 2x4 wall in front of it all. the really interesting part is that there is no wall sheathing or tar paper or anything, just 3/4" bevel siding over the studs.

the other side

hmm. the floor on the other side was a little less pretty. but the "creative framing" is beautiful!

look what we found!

softwood floors, in better condition than we thought. [the other half of the room is MUCH less promising; just you wait]. two hours of wet scraping later, the fir glistened like only 88-year-old wood can.
